Question: How important is keeping good manners in islam, and how can a person achieve a noble character
Shaykh AI:
B’ism Allah… Alhamdulillah, from the teachings of Mawlana Shaykh Nurjan Mirahmadi (QS), good manners hold immense importance in Islam. When one begins to show characteristics such as respect, love, and humility, the Divine Law (shari’ah) begins to unfold itself. This is because “Ittaqullah wa alimukumullah” (Surat Al-Baqarah, 2:282) – “…And Be conscious of/Fear Allah, And Allah teaches you. And Allah is the All-Knower of everything.”
To achieve a noble character, one must exhibit loyalty, humility, and a sense of service to Allah. It’s essential to understand that good manners are not just for the benefit of others but are a means to show respect and love for Allah. This is beautifully illustrated in the story of Qitmir, the dog from the Companions of the Cave, who displayed unwavering loyalty and good character, earning the honor of being mentioned in the Quran.
The path to achieving noble character involves continuously testing oneself through challenges, just as the dog was tested in the cave. This includes developing a sense of humility, understanding that “I’m nothing. I’m doing it all for you, Ya Rabbi. To be of service to you, Ya Rabbi. You are rich, and I am poor. You’re everything and I am nothing.”
Furthermore, the teachings emphasize that good character opens the understanding of the Divine Law (shari’ah). It guides individuals on how to act in various situations, such as entering a Jum’ah prayer, and teaches them to avoid actions that may work against them due to a lack of manners.
In essence, the significance of good manners in Islam is to open the doors to Allah’s (AJ) mercy and to achieve a noble character. It is through good character that one can attain the love of Allah and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and be an exemplar of faith. May Allah inspire us to goodness and bless us with noble character. Ameen.
And we pray that Allah (AJ) inspire us to goodness, to good character and to be exemplars of our faith so that Sayyidina Muhammad (saws) to be happy with us, to be looking and nazar upon us, not through shame and embarrassment but through pleasure and satisfaction that, ‘I’m pleased with your character.’ And as a result, that faiz (downpouring blessings), that light and those emanations they come like a breeze, like a gentle breeze out of nowhere a breeze may hit your heart and it takes, it takes, it is a dress that can’t be explained. It’s a emanation of love from Allah’s (AJ) divinely presence. We pray that Allah (AJ) to dress us from those realities and to bless us with good character inshaAllah. Bi Hurmati Muhammad al Mustafa wa bi Siri Surat al-Fatiha.
