B’ism Allah… Alhamdulillah, from the teachings of Mawlana Shaykh Nurjan Mirahmadi (QS), Nafs Al-Ammara, known as the Commanding Self, represents the level of the self that is driven by carnal desires and unchecked impulses. The characteristics of Nafs Al-Ammara include selfishness, arrogance, hardness of heart, oppression of others, lack of gratitude, and indulging in envy, anger, and folly. This level of self is heavily influenced by lower desires and is considered the base, animalistic aspect of the human ego.
In terms of implications, Shaykh Nurjan Mirahmadi (QS) teaches that when the nafs is at this level, it can be our worst enemy, living within us, dominating our rationality, and tyrannizing our being, thus keeping the soul imprisoned. It’s also warned that without the guidance and strong hand of a wise spiritual teacher, it becomes very challenging to rise above and purify these influences.
The prescribed remedy includes strong presence and connection with the Shaykh, acknowledging one’s flaws, and striving to embody humility and sincerity, which directly oppose the traits of Nafs Al-Ammara. The journey of spiritual elevation from Nafs Al-Ammara to higher levels of the nafs involves continuously seeking the support and faiz (spiritual blessings) of the Shaykh, along with practicing remembrance of Allah ﷻ and following the guidance provided by the teachers of the Tariqa.
