B’ism Allah… Alhamdulillah, from the teachings of Mawlana Shaykh Nurjan Mirahmadi (QS), battling the lower self and bad character is a fundamental aspect of the spiritual journey. The root of all bad characteristics is akin to the fire of Iblis, and giving in to these negative traits only intensifies them. The fire of anger, jealousy, and other bad characteristics stems from this root and can lead to harm to the body and mind, and ultimately, disbelief.
To combat this, the saints and guides (awliyaullah) teach us to suffocate and extinguish this fire within us. Just as a fire rages when given oxygen, these bad characteristics intensify when we give in to them. Suffocating these traits by controlling and conquering them is essential. The heart is the throne of the Divine, and the battle for control of the heart is crucial, as it determines the state of our entire being.
The battle against the lower self and bad character is a continuous struggle. It involves recognizing the different levels of the self, such as the Commanding Self (Nafs Ammara), the Blaming Self (Nafs Al-Lawwama), and the Inspired Self (Nafs Al-Mulhima). Each level presents its own challenges and dangers, such as hypocrisy, arrogance, and anger.
The presence of a strong teacher and guide is essential in this battle. The guidance and energy received from the shaykh help in lifting the lower self and deceitful character, leading to an acknowledgment and love for the Divine presence.
Furthermore, engaging in muhasabah, which is self-accounting, is crucial. Identifying the root causes of bad character and working on the opposite traits is a key part of the battle. This involves seeking guidance on specific practices such as making zikr, salawats on the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and seeking forgiveness (istighfar) to counteract these negative traits.
In addition, maintaining a state of wudu (ablution) at all times is emphasized as a shield of protection against the attacks of shaitan. It is a means to keep the inner sickness at bay and prevent severe spiritual harm.
Ultimately, the battle against the lower self and bad character requires constant vigilance, self-accounting, seeking guidance, and implementing spiritual practices to counteract negative traits. May Allah (ﷻ) grant us the strength and wisdom to overcome these challenges and purify our hearts. Ameen.
