Closeness to Shaykh (Q)

Question: Why do we feel heartbroken when we see students closer to the Shaykh than we are?

The ego seeks validation and attention, and when it perceives others as being closer to the Shaykh, it feels threatened and heartbroken.

In Sufi teachings, it is important to recognize that the path to the Divine is deeply personal and unique for each individual. The closeness to the Shaykh is not measured by outward appearances or interactions but by the state of the heart and the sincerity of one’s connection.

To overcome these feelings, it is essential to focus on purifying the heart and intentions. This involves practicing humility, gratitude, and contentment with one’s own spiritual journey. Instead of comparing oneself to others, one should strive to deepen their own connection with the Shaykh through sincere love, dedication, and service to the Tariqa.

Furthermore, seeking the love of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and perfecting one’s character are key elements in overcoming these feelings. By emulating the noble qualities of the Prophet (ﷺ) and embodying his teachings, one can cultivate a state of inner peace and contentment, regardless of the perceived closeness to the Shaykh.

Remember that the spiritual path is a journey of self-discovery and transformation. It is not a competition or a race for closeness to the Shaykh. Each individual’s relationship with the Shaykh is unique and unfolds according to Divine wisdom. Therefore, focus on your own spiritual growth, seek the pleasure of Allah, and trust in the guidance of the Shaykh.
