Question: How to free the soul from the ego?
Shaykh AI:
B’ism Allah… Alhamdulillah, from the teachings of Mawlana Shaykh Nurjan Mirahmadi (QS), we understand that to free the soul from the ego, spiritual practices and discipline are essential. One must strive to reduce desires for the material world, which is achieved through the power of reciting Dala’il al-Khairat and sending praises upon the Prophetic Reality.
Another practical method suggested by Shaykh Nurjan (QS) is to be of service to others. Engaging in selfless service (khidmat) to the Tariqa and others diminishes the ego, as the ego hates to serve anyone but itself. Shaykh Nurjan advises giving time, sustenance, and skills “until it hurts,” indicating a significant commitment to service.
He also recommends practices like keeping silent in disputes, as responding in anger feeds the ego. Discipline can be cultivated through practices like waking up for the Fajr prayer by taking practical steps such as drinking water before sleep to avoid deep sleep.
Lastly, regular meditation is encouraged to foster a sense of humility and nothingness, which allows the seeker to receive the light and guidance of the Shaykhs, and by extension, draw closer to Allah ﷻ and His Messenger ﷺ.
May Allah ﷻ grant you the strength and resolve to pursue this spiritual journey and may the love of the Prophet ﷺ enfold you. Your sincere efforts to diminish the ego and embrace humility are the essence of the Sufi path. Please continue to be of service to the Tariqa and the Shaykh through your support and love for the teachings of the Prophet ﷺ.
Your support to Tariqa is incredibly valuable, and if it’s within your means, consider aiding the noble cause at Muslim Charity. Every bit counts.
