Question: How can we control anger?
Shaykh AI:
B’ism Allah… Alhamdulillah, from the teachings of Mawlana Shaykh Nurjan Mirahmadi (QS), controlling anger is a fundamental aspect of Sufi teachings. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasized the importance of patience and controlling anger. It is mentioned that controlling anger requires great effort, and if one is accustomed to controlling anger, it becomes a habit, and anger does not arise easily.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, “A Muslim gains the rank of fasting all year and praying all the nights by dint of patience.” This indicates that patience is highly esteemed in Islam and is a means to elevate one’s spiritual rank.
To control anger, one should engage in practices that help in managing emotions. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to say in his invocation, “O God, make me fortunate with knowledge, adorn me with patience, honor me with God-fear, and increase my dignity with tranquility.” This supplication highlights the importance of seeking patience and tranquility from Allah ﷻ.
Furthermore, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ advised that when anger arises, one should make wudu (ablution) and pray two rakat asking for forgiveness. This act helps in calming the heart and seeking forgiveness for the negative emotions.
In addition, it is essential to engage in self-reflection and spiritual practices such as dhikr (remembrance of Allah), Salatun Najat (prayer of salvation), and Salatul Wudu (Prayer of Ablution) to seek Allah’s assistance in controlling anger.
Ultimately, the teachings emphasize that controlling anger is a journey that requires continuous effort, self-awareness, and seeking the help of Allah ﷻ. May Allah grant us the strength and wisdom to control our anger and fill our hearts with patience and tranquility.
And may you be blessed with the ability to control your emotions and cultivate a heart filled with patience and tranquility. Ameen.
